I hope you had a nice, restful and relaxing Thanksgiving! I am very thankful for all of you and your kids, each and every day. :)
Tuesday is college pride day Friday is Team color day . GOOOO Green team !! This week in math, we will begin winding down our unit on shapes. Students will take a formative assessment on 2d and 3d shapes this week. Students will work on exemplars in math groups (higher order thinking word problems). We will review 2d and 3d shapes and the different ways we can sort shapes as well as how we can decompose, or break shapes apart. We can cut a square diagonally one time to make 2 triangles or we can cut a square in the middle to make 2 triangles. We will review that shapes with 4 sides are quadrilaterals and begin comparing 2d and 3d shapes. How are they alike? (A cube has square faces) Different? (A square is 2d/flat and a cube is 3d/solid). We will also continue to review putting groups in order from smallest to largest or largest to smallest. WRITING This week in writer’s workshop, we will continue our informational unit. Students will finish up their “How To” pieces and we will write about the life cycle of an apple using descriptive words. Students will then get to do an apple tasting at the end of the week, describing each apple we taste! We will talk about the class’ favorite and least favorite apple. We will also continue to work on adding transition words to each step (first, then, next, after that, finally, etc.) and continue to work on drawing neat pictures/diagrams with labels and details. READING During reading this week, our mini lessons will focus on pointing to each word as we read. We will continue re-reading, making the words match the pictures, and sharing labels and thoughts about books with our partners as well as asking our partners questions about what we are reading. We will continue to work in guided reading groups (pointing under each word as we read, making predictions (not right or wrong it’s just a guess based on the title and cover page), visualizing- having a picture in our minds about the topic we are reading about, making connections- what does this story remind you of?, and answering comprehension questions. Students will work on building their reading stamina independently, reading with their partner, and work on IRead.

We are continuing to practice for our Thanksgiving performance in class! The invitation was sent out a few weeks ago, and the lunch schedule was sent home in Thursday folders. Be on the lookout this week for more information about the day!
Please send in your child's shirt if you have not done so .We will be decorating them Wednesday and Thursday. In math this week, we will continue our unit on shapes. We will delve into 2d shapes and how many sides and corners they have. Along with square, rectangle, and triangle, one of the shapes we are discussing is the diamond, however we will be calling it a rhombus! We will also be talking about quadrilaterals- all the shapes that have 4 sides and corners: square, rectangle, rhombus, and trapezoid. Students will get to create their own Thanksgiving symbol mat using 2d shapes. Students will also participate in a 2D shape challenge where they use shapes to make other shapes. (Example, putting two triangles together to make a square, putting 3 triangles together to make a trapezoid, etc.) In writer’s workshop we will continue our informational unit. We will continue our “How To” pieces. Students are finishing up the how to book of their choice and then we will move into a Thanksgiving related how-to book (How to make a turkey, how to set the table, how to invite guests, how to decorate for thanksgiving, etc.). We will also continue to work on adding transition words to each step (first, then, next, after that, finally, etc.) and continue to work on drawing neat pictures/diagrams with labels and details. READING During reading this week, our mini lessons will focus on re-reading, making the words match the pictures, and sharing labels and thoughts about books with our partners as well as asking our partners questions about what we are reading.
