He will talk about how he is a community helper. In Math this week: We will be wrapping up our counting with friends unit. I will be pre-assessing your child on our next unit “Shapes”. We have been working on creating groups of tens and counting how many ones are in teen numbers. Please have your child view the video below to help them practice this skill . https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uedvwH6Ay18 In Writing : Your child will be completing the post-assessment of our writing unit. We will review “When we are done we have just begun” and how to write a TRUE story before they begin. We will review adding more details to our pictures-not just drawing pictures that are floating in the middle of the page. Students will be thinking about the who, what, and where their story takes place to help with details in our pictures and writing. We will begin to add speech bubbles to our pictures too. In reading: We will continue to build your child’s reading stamina. We will also be working on blending words, using word families (at, ug,og, etc) . Please encourage your child to read daily and encourage them to use their reading strategies. In Social Studies: We will wrap up our unit “ Who we are” and your child will share their 3-D community helper project . Be on the lookout for their project presentation on seesaw .

If you have not connected with your child's seesaw please do so . It is a really great tool to talk to your child about what they learned and encourage them to share what they learned . Writing : This week in writer’s workshop we continue our Lucy Calkins narrative unit of study. We will continue to talk about how students can revise their teaching piece. We will also continue our saying "When we are done, we've just begun!". Students will be put in pairs that they will work with in writing and reading. Partners will practice working collaboratively, and being good COMMUNICATORS with each other. What can you do at home?? Have students practice sounding out words and writing down the sounds they hear on paper long with drawing pictures with details and labels on their pictures. You can also remind students that when writing, the first letter in a sentence is uppercase and the rest is lower case, there are finger spaces between words, and periods at the end of sentences. We will continue to work on this in class. READING: During reading, students will continue reading/looking at nonfiction (teach about the world) books from their book bins independently and with a partner and will also begin reading old favorite storybooks. We will focus on how “Readers Learn From Books, Too” and “We are Storybook Readers.” We will continue to work on building your child' reading stamina What can you do at home?? Read every night like you are working with a partner (sit side by side, have a book in the middle, read back and forth.) Ask your child questions about what she/he is reading about. If your child seems to be focusing more on needing work with letters and letter sounds (which is PERFECTLY okay!), have them find letter in their books or around the house and ask them what sound it makes and visa-versa. Math This week in math we will continue our counting unit. We will review counting skills ( counting to 100, counting by 10's and practicing counting by 5's) The students will create a counting lily pad game and them work with a partner and play the game . After I model, they will discuss things like asking questions, reading their pieces to each other, and giving suggestions to their partner about their writing. We will also introduce multi page stories and talk about how to use the stapler safely so students can add more pages to their books. Student will also begin to make cover pages for their books with a title and pictures/labels to match. What can you do at home?? Math This week in math we will continue our counting unit. This week students will be working on “exemplars,” which are higher order thinking word problems. Students will be following the strategy of CUBES (c-circle the numbers, u-underline the question, b-box the key words, e- evaluate (how can we solve this?), and s-solve.) We will also continue counting to 100 by 1’s and 10’s and writing numbers to 20 Extra Reading Info: This past week I tested your child's reading levels. I looked at various reading characteristics to determine what reading group I placed your child in. Each group fits to meet each of your child's needs . To build your child's confidence we talked about how reading is the magic that i was going to teach them this year . I told them that each of them will learn to read and the most important thing to remember is to trust their brains and work hard each day .We will continue to talk about reading strategies ,such as " stretchy snake", and " owl eyes". Each child also made a "tap it out sheet" . This sheet helps them tap out the sounds that they hear in the words , which is really helpful. What you can do at home : Have your child read to you and encourage them to use their reading strategies , have them use their " owl eyes" and look at the pictures for clues . Hello Wonderful Parents ,
Here are a few reminders for the upcoming week 1. We have Library this coming Wednesday. Please have your child bring their book back my Tuesday at the latest . 2. We will be going to the Science Lab next Friday as well. Be on the lookout for some fun pics. 3. Friendly Reminder: If you have not completed the volunteer training , please do so before coming to volunteer . 4. Mystery reader for next week : Cara Traub - Please let me know what book/activity you will be doing . Math 5. Our IB word of the month is communicator In math we will continue review counting by 1’s to 100 and crossing the decade- going from 29 to 30, 59 to 60, etc. We will also review counting on from a number. Students put the number in their “pocket” and continue counting. For example, if I asked students to count on from the number 19, I would have them pretend to put the number 19 silently in their pocket and continue counting…20, 21, 22,… We will also be working on sorting, counting, and ordering different groups. Students can sort items by color, shape, or size, count how many items are in each group, and put the groups in order from least to greatest or greatest to least. We will also have your child complete a formative assessment to see how your child is doing in the unit thus far. At home, please continue to have students practice counting to 100 by 1’s and 10’s every night and practicing writing their numbers 0-20. (Fun ways of writing numbers can be with chalk outside, in sand or shaving cream, on a whiteboard, etc.) When students have mastered this, you can practice skip counting by 2, 3, 4, etc. and discuss odd and even numbers. Writing In writer’s workshop we continue our Lucy Calkins narrative unit of study. Along with “When we are done we have just begun,” we will talk about how students can revise their teaching piece. Students will be put in pairs that they will work with in writing and reading. We will talk about how to use the stapler safely so students can add more pages to their books. Student will continue to make cover pages for their books with a title and pictures/labels to match. I will also introduce to students how we can plan our book before we begin so that students can get all the paper they need together before getting to work. Phonics For phonics we will review letters c, o, a, g and d and discuss the letter/sound of m as in the word get. You can practice these letters at home too. Here is a great letter/sound song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MTeUONxZYAs -In social studies, we will continue talking about community helpers and how they are similar/different in other communities including other countries around the world, students’ role as a citizen in their community, and the different roles in a community. We will also continue to add the learner profile words (communicator, thinker, and principled) as well as key concepts (function, connection, and responsibility) to our daily vocabulary. We will be looking at pictures of different communities and talking about what we notice and what we wonder. What you can do at home: Discuss the following: Why is it important to be a good citizen? What is a community? What is a community helper? What role do I play in a community? Hi Parents!
