Hello Parents,
I am so excited that the kids will be returning to school for a full day next week. Below you will find a few reminders and information for next week. Dismissal Tag Please make sure your child has their dismissal tag on their bookbag and have them practice saying their number (especially carpool ) this helps with smooth transitions during dismissal. If you need one , don’t worry we will be double checking their tags when they arrive and place one on their bookbag . Materials Needed :
Water Bottle
Lunch -10:00-10:30
Snack- 12:45-1:00
Scheduling ***I am attaching a schedule that we will follow for phase 3 when your child is in school, this time will also reflect their URL schedule .You will notice that live lessons happen 3 times in the day . Morning Meeting , Math, and Reading . Your child will receive their small group time for math and reading during their designated day. Since we do not have school on Wednesday’s I will be doing whole group lessons for Morning Meeting , Math, and Reading. Please compare the schedule to the times on the lesson plans as some blocks have changed . I am doing small group in the classroom because I want to make sure I am able to give your child instruction that caters to their individual learning levels . Their instructional time in school will be meaningful ,and when they are not in school for that day the whole group lessons will allow for students online to ask any questions that they may have. I also want to make sure to continue to build our classroom community so that the kids get to know their classmates , as that is sooooo important . I know things are crazy right now and my most important goal is to give your child as much consistency as possible, as they are my number one priority😊 A peak into next week… In math next week- 8:30-8:45 ( Meet online -Whole Group) In math, we will continue our shapes unit and review all of the 2d and 3d shape names and all of their sides, vertices, edges, and faces. This week we will be comparing 2d and 3d shapes like a square and a cube and a sphere and a circle. Students need to know how they are the same and different. For example a square and a cube are different because a square is 2d and a cube is 3d. They are the same because the cube has square faces. This is one of the more difficult standards so this is something you can definitely talk about at home. We will also be looking at 2d and 3d shape cards. Students will be identifying the names- This can be tricky too since the 3d shapes look flat on paper. In writing next week-12:00-12:45( In class) In writer’s workshop we continue our Lucy Calkins narrative unit of study. Students will learn how to write a TRUE story (see below). We will begin by reading an exemplar text called “Creak Said the Bed” and look at some techniques the author used. We will talk about grabbing the readers’ attention by starting our stories with something like “One dark night..,” “One snowy day…,” “One early morning…” etc. We will begin to include who was in the story, where the story took place, what happened, and how they felt. I will introduce students to speech bubbles too. Partners will continue practice working together and we will review how we can plan our book before we begin. We will focus on adding more details to our pictures-not just drawing pictures that are floating in the middle of the page. What you can do at home: have students practice sounding out words and writing down the sounds they hear on paper and draw pictures with details and label their pictures. You can also remind students that when writing, the first letter in a sentence is uppercase and the rest is lower case, there are finger spaces between words, and periods at the end of sentences. We will continue to work on this in class. In reading next week.. 11:15-11:30 (Meet online-whole group) I will be assessing your child’s reading level to give them books that are just right for them .We will also go book shopping to help your child get excited about reading ( who doesn’t love to shop 😊) and it will also be the beginning of teaching your child how to build their reading stamina . We will use phrases like “when you’re done you have just begun. I want to build your child’s confidence and independence while reading. In Phonics next week.. We will review all previous letters and begin to look at the letters “T” and “I”. In Social Studies next week.. We will continue to work on our IB unit “Who we are “.

Hi Parents,
Let me being saying how much joy I feel in my heart. It truly meant the world to me to get to see each of my students smiling faces . I know that everything has been changing so much and I want you all to know I am in the same boat with you , but the most important aspect is to make sure that your child is happy and clearly they were very happy this week. Below you will find important information for next week. In math next week : Scheduling - Small Groups will be done for FTF students only and we will be do calendar math as a class. You will notice that the calendar invite this will say “morning meeting/math ) We will be on the call for morning meeting and calendar math only . What we will be learning … In math, we will continue our shapes unit and begin discussing 3d shapes and their attributes- specifically cubes, cones, cylinders, and spheres. We will work on finding 3d shapes in our environment. Take your child on a shape hunt and see how many 3D shapes they can find .Students will also inquire about the number of sides, edges, and vertices each of the 3d shapes has. This week the student will also use 3d shape nets to make their own 3d shape and create a real-world object out of it! In reading next week : Scheduling - Small groups will be on teams . I have organized the groups and will send out individual emails to let you know when your child’s day is . Please note the time to meet will be 10:00-10:30 . I know that there was some confusion this week ,so my apologies . I think next week will be a lot smoother😊 Please do not have your child login if it is not their time . If your child continuing just URL please login to the Wednesday reading group What we will be learning … Students will be learning all about old favorite storybooks. We will focus on how “Readers Learn from Books too” and “We are Storybook Readers.” (Please see below). Our minilessons will be about how we talk more like the characters, look at the pictures and words, etc. We will be reading “The Billy Goats Gruff” and by the end of the week the whole class will help bring the story alive . suggestions to bring the storybooks alive at home (If your student keeps asking you to re-read a story to them, you know why 😊.) Here are the steps:
In Phonics next week… We will be working on the letters L and H . Please review the previous letters and continue to practice them with your child. In Social Studies Next week … You will notice that all the Kindergarten students asked questions to community helpers last week ,all of those questions were submitted to that specific community helper , so when you open that lesson this week they will get to see that particular community helper. I hope that all of you have a great weekend!! Hi Parents!
I know that our schedule keeps changing and that it can be overwhelming. My goal is for your child to have as much consistency as possible, but please continue to be patient and flexible with us as things are changing daily and weekly. This week, students have the option to return for face to face instruction. One of the goals for phase 1 is creating meaningful relationships between students and their teachers. Morning meeting will continue to be synchronous for all students whether they are in the classroom or at home. You will notice that on this week’s lesson plans in math, we will be doing whole group calendar synchronous lessons . After the whole group synchronous calendar lesson, students at home will stay on the call and watch the pre-recorded lesson with the students that are in the classroom as well. Once the lesson is done , the students who are at home will complete their seesaw assignment and the students who are at school will complete it when they get home . If your child will not be attending in person for phase 1, they will have the option to attend a virtual small group on Wednesdays with me. Students who also aren’t able to attend in person on Monday due to Labor Day can also join the virtual small group with me this Wednesday. We will be conducting small groups with students who are in the classroom. I want to make sure that the students feel like all their classmates are with them each day , and it builds a stronger classroom community . We know there will be a lot of transition times due to arrival and dismissal as well as extra cleaning procedures in between groups of students. For this reason, we are providing pre-recorded lessons and activities in ELA to ensure your child is still actively learning. We will also plan on social studies being asynchronous this week . Math this week we will be comparing 2D shapes and their attributes and review positional words using shapes . Students will have a formative assessment on this content on Friday on Seesaw. Formative assessments help teachers understand what students understand at this point in the unit. For this formative, students need to know the names of the 2d shapes, how many sides and corners/vertices the shapes have, and positional words. You can help students with the technology component, but please let students answer the questions on their own. We will move on to 3d shapes next week In reading and writing this week, we will begin our Lucy Calkins Reading and Writing Units of Study. Writing: students will be introduced to getting their ideas on paper and begin drawing and writing/labeling something they know about. We will discuss that when students think they are done, they can go back over their piece and add to their pictures and their words(labels and sentences). After they add to their pictures and their words and have checked over everything they can then start a new piece. Our saying for this is, “When we are done, we’ve just begun!” In reading You will also notice that we will be doing synchronous whole group ela mini lessons (the seesaw pre-recorded videos.)When students go off to do their independent work for ELA, they won’t need to watch the video unless they missed the whole group time. Everyone will complete the activities. The students will understand that they can read the world around them such as words on cereal boxes, signs in the community, and much more! We will talk about reading from cover to cover and going back and re-reading to learn more. The same saying in writing applies to reading too: “When we are done, we’ve just begun!” Students will also learn about “WOW” pages in their books. A “WOW” page is a page that students find an interesting piece of information that they learned about. In phonics this week we will be working on the letters G and M. Please review C,A,O and D with your child . Specials this coming week and moving forward : Please listen to the video from Ms.Strom that will help you find your specials teams. They are starting to do live videos starting next week. Video link on how to find Art Channel for K: http://www.viewpure.com/tyu31NMt-v0?ref=bkmk Hi Parents!
I hope that your child has enjoyed their second week of school . I am SO impressed at how well they are doing with the technology. Thank you so much for all of your support at home! I am happy to see that they are learning from home, but I cannot wait until I get to see them in person 😊 There is a lot of important information in this email, so don’t hesitate to let me know if you have any questions! Lessons are going to change a little bit this week so we can start working with students in small groups and for them to get familiar with this process. We will only be on live at 8:15 for morning meeting, for reading and math small groups daily, and Friday’s for the Math and Reading block . I want to make sure that I support your child’s individual learning needs and this will allow me to get to know them better. In the lesson plans you will see I am working with small groups every day in math and reading. Following this email you will receive what day your student will work with me in a small group for THIS WEEK. Please keep in mind that these small groups are for THIS WEEK ONLY. Since students will have the option to come to the building the following week, we will have to rework small groups based on which students are in person with us on a given day. You will see calendar invites for morning meeting daily, math, and reading on Friday. There are also calendar invites for each reading and math group on the calendar. Please only join for your students’ specific reading and math group. Please be on the lookout for an email from me by Monday afternoon in regards to Phase 1 return to school. I will be asking you how students will be getting home and what their carpool or bus number is, letting you know what time they will come to school, tell you if your child needs to bring any materials, and review new office hours with you. Students will be assigned a day to come, but teachers will select what time the students will come. It is very important that you let me know how they will be getting home and what their bus/carpool number is as soon as possible. This week we will be working with 2d shapes and talking about defining and non-defining attributes. Defining attributes are those that don’t change and make the shape what it is such as how many sides and corners/vertices, if the shape is closed. Non-defining attributes are things that CAN change such as size, color/pattern, orientation, and if the shape is open. In reading we will be reading “Mrs. Wishy Washy” and discussing patterns that we may notice in a book, reading with expression, one to one correspondence(touching each word as you read it), making predictions, inferencing, and eagle eye reading strategy (using the pictures to help us figure out a word- there is a reading strategy chart in your resource folder). For independent work in reading on some days, students will get to explore EPIC books and choose a book to read or listen to. See class code below. For phonics we will be discussing the letter a and d. We will review the letters c and o. We will also introduce students to the blending board so we can begin sounding out words using the stretchy snake reading strategy (reading strategy poster in green resource folder.) In social studies we will continue our unit on community helpers. We will discuss principals, police officers, park rangers, veterinarians, and how students are community helpers! Don’t forget about Iready! Students are required to be on for 45 minutes a week in both reading and math! Hi Parents!

I hope the kids enjoyed their first week of school! It was so great getting to know them this week and see them come out of their shells. 😊 Attached are the lesson plans for next week. Lessons are going to change a little bit. We will only be on live at 8:15 for morning meeting and at 10:45 for science/social studies. You won’t see invites in your calendar for Math and Reading/ELA anymore. Math and Reading/ELA lessons will be pre-recorded in Seesaw and have accompanying activities. As I stated previously, Seesaw is up and running! You will be submitting all assignments on Seesaw; not just the graded assignments- as a reminder- here are the links on how to respond to activities and add an assignment though the journal: Please make sure to go to the folder that says “Mrs. McKernan’s URL class How Students Respond to Assignments in Seesaw How Students Post to their Journal in Seesaw You will also see highlighted items that have an asterisk. These are the graded items. Please make sure to turn students’ work in on Seesaw. We will also be having a meet the counselor/diversity lesson on Friday August 28th at 12:00pm . There will be a calendar invite for this lesson and you will join the same way you have been joining our class calls. On Monday, we will begin social-emotional lessons and discuss self-awareness and emotions. On Wednesday, we will be starting morning meeting and calendar math. Please have a piece of paper/pencil or dry erase marker/board available in case students need to write or draw anything. In math, we will begin talking about 2d shapes and positional words. We will talk about 2d shapes we can see in the real world as well as the ways we can compare different 2d shapes. In reading/ela, students will continue working on their “All About Me” book and start having fun with their “Alphabet Vest!” As a reminder, the newsletter for this is in your red resource folder and on our Weebly under “Newsletters.” We will also begin working on Iready reading and continue with letters and letter sounds. As a reminder, students are required to be on iready reading and math for 45 minutes each week. We will get started on math next week unless you would like to get a head start this week. Our no specials day and independent work time would be a perfect opportunity to fit in additional Iready time. Don’t forget that I will be doing one on one assessments with students next week. Here is the google doc link for your day and time. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1p7aFfg8mIfbPFWveZaFtSIODHvz4SQgZZJmLC6y0HE4/edit?usp=sharing Make sure students are on their Microsoft Teams Account and I will make a video call to them there. If you have any questions while I am testing please feel free to email Ms.McCullough . As always, please let me know if you have any questions! |
